Chapter 6 Lesson 2 Respecting Yourself & Others

2 Warm Up While walking down the hall at school, Marya sees Scott intentionally bump into a boy walking in the opposite direction. Scott sneers, “Watch where you’re going!” and laughs as the boy scrambles to pick up his dropped books and papers. Marya thinks Scott is acting like a bully, but she isn’t sure how to make it clear that she doesn’t approve of his behavior. How could Marya let Scott know how she feels about his disrespectful behavior?

3 Respect for Yourself Having self-respect will strengthen your relationships. When you respect yourself, you’re more less likely to let other people talk you into taking risks that could harm your health. During your teen years you may be looking for your personal identity Your sense of who you are and where you belong in the world.

4 Respect for Others Listen to other people
Be considerate of other’s feelings Develop mutual trust Be realistic in your expectations

5 Tolerance Sometimes people treat others with disrespect because of:
Prejudice – an unfair opinion or judgment of a particular group of people. Stereotype – an exaggerated or oversimplified belief about people who belong to a certain group. Building TOLERANCE can help you build healthy relationships. the ability to accept others’ differences.

6 Disrespectful Behaviors
Bullying – deliberately harming or threatening other people who cannot easily defend themselves.

7 Hazing - making others perform certain tasks (in an abusive and humiliating way)in order to join the group.

8 Independent Activity Watch the following video and answer the questions. Amy's Choice Why did Amy start talking to the man online? Where did Amy meet the man? How long did Amy talk to the man before meeting him in person? Amy knew how old the man was. Why did she keep talking to him?

9 Group Activity Split into groups of 3 or 4. Answer the following questions with your group. Be prepared to discuss and share with the class. Why aren’t many teens concerned about giving out their personal information online? At what point do you think Amy regretted sharing her personal information? If your friend confided in you that he or she is thinking about meeting a person online, what would you tell him/her?

10 Activity Cyberbullying is a new form of bullying. People use technology such as the internet & cell phones to bully, harass, or threaten other. s, blogs, text messages, and IM’s are all methods that cyber bullies use. Cyberbullying is disrespectful behavior. With your group, create a slogan (“catchy phrase”) to discourage people from being cyberbullies. Be sure to include: Ways teens can avoid becoming victims of cyberbullying Suggestions for victims of cyberbullying A description of cyberbullying
