“In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church” Ephesians 5:28-29

the rule of categories Ten Commandments are to be interpreted according to the rule of categories; that is, every commandment stands for a whole category of sins and duties.

“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.” Matthew 5:21–22

Heidelberg Catechism “I am not to dishonor, hate, injure or kill my neighbor by thoughts, words, or gestures, and much less by deeds…By forbidding murder God teaches us that He hates the root of murders, such as envy, hatred, angers and desire of revenge, and that He regards all these as murder.”

Michael Horton “In the church, these forms of ‘hidden murder’ are tolerated, while we write our own unpardonable sins. In Galatians 5:19 right up there with sexual immorality, idolatry, and witchcraft are ‘hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissentions, factions, and envy.’ And yet, it is precisely these sour apples that create the greatest division in the body of Christ, destroy relationships, and leave our neighbors in distress.”

Michael Horton “The Heidelberg Catechism spoke of the ‘fruit of the flesh’ in Galatians as, ‘hidden murder.’ Gossip, slander, back-biting, these are often tolerated in Christian circles where the slightest off-color joke would bring reprisals. Instead of bearing each other’s burdens, we seem too often to revel in them. That, of course, is part of our fallen nature: to take some secret delight in the misfortune of others.”

9th Commandment “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.” Exodus 20:16
