The Roman Republic Early Romans did not want one person to become too powerful so they set up a republic as their form of government. Republic - system of government in which the people choose their officials.

The governing body of the Roman Republic was the Senate.
Had 300 members. They were all patricians. (Upper class - landholders)

The senators elected two consuls to supervise the business of the government and command armies.
They could only serve one term.

A dictator was given control of the government by the Senate for 6 months in time of war.

Cincinnatus: Dictator who gave up his power. Seen as a symbol of virtue and good government.

Laws of the Twelve Tables
The laws of Rome were placed on twelve tablets and placed in the Forum. (marketplace)

The Plebeian class (middle class and majority) eventually demand access to government.

Plebeians gained the power to elect their own officials called tribunes.
Tribunes could veto (block) laws and make new laws.

Boys and girls of all classes were educated.
(Male) Patrician, Plebeians, and selected foreigners were given citizenship in Rome. Slaves were not based on race.

Religion Polytheistic – many gods.
Feasts and celebrations honored the gods. Jupiter – ruled over the gods. Juno – goddess of marriage. Neptune – god of the sea. Mars – god of war. Diana – goddess of the hunt. Minerva - goddess of wisdom. Venus - goddess of love.
