2
Why classify? Think of three examples where we group things.
Why do we group these things?
3
Classifying Living Things
We put livings things into two large groups: Animals Plants
4
Animals Animals are spilt into two major groups: Vertebrates
Invertebrates
5
Vertebrates These are animals with a backbone.
There are five groups of vertebrates: Amphibians Birds Fish Reptiles mammals
6
Amphibians Features: live on land and in water
Have gills as youth and lungs as adults
7
Birds Have feathers and hollow bones Lay hard shelled eggs
Warm blooded
8
Fish Characteristics vary dependant on which category the fish is classified under Features – Boney – Osteichthyes Cartilaginous – Chondrichthyes Jawless - Agnatha
9
Reptiles Features: lay eggs Cold blooded Dry, scaly skin Breathe air
10
Mammals CHARACTERISTICS Have hair and produce milk
Give birth to live offspring (no eggs) Warm blooded
11
Summary of Vertebrates
12
Invertebrates These are animals without a backbone
There are eight groups of invertebrates We will discuss four Nematodes Annelids Molluscs Arthropods
13
Molluscs Crawl on a single fleshy pad. Can have a shell
14
Annelids Features – Ring like segments Most live in water some on land
15
Nematodes Have long thin round worm like bodies
Have bodies with no segments
16
Arthropods Have lots of legs and segmented bodies.
There are four group of arthropods: Arachnids Centipedes & Millipedes Crustaceans Insects
17
Arthropods Have lots of legs and segmented bodies.
There are four group of arthropods: Arachnids Centipedes & Millipedes Crustaceans Insects
18
Arachnids - spiders ticks and scorpians
Four pair of jointed legs Land dwelling Breathe through gills called book lungs exoskeleton
19
Arthropods – Myriapods Centipedes & Millipedes
Body has many segments Each segment has jointed legs
20
Arthropods - Crustacean
Have five-seven pairs of legs First pair often used as pincers Bodies covered in shell Breathe through gills
21
Arthropods - Insects Have three pairs of jointed legs
Bodies divided into three sections Often have wings Exoskeleton Breathe - tracheae
