1 Today’s Agenda…  Bellringer: How do ocean currents affect the climate of coastal areas? Review Notes on Waves and Tides

2 Waves and Tides Study Pack #9

3 Today’s Goals… I can explain what causes waves.
I can explain what causes tides.

4 Waves Waves carry energy through the water Wind can cause waves
The height of the waves is affected by: Speed of wind Length of time the wind blows Distance over which the wind blows

5 Waves Shape the Shoreline
Waves deposit eroded sediments on shore, forming beaches Waves hit shores at an angle and move sediments sideways from one beach to another Waves also erode land and weather rocks on the shoreline

6 Tides Tides are the rise and fall of sea level
When sea levels rise it is high tide, when they fall it is low tide

7 Causes of Tides Tides are NOT created by wind
Tides are created by the gravitational pull of the Moon and the Sun on Earth A bulge of water occurs on the side of Earth closest to the moon and the side opposite of the moon Page 387 Figure 13

8 Spring Tides The moon, sun, and Earth line up Figure 13 A & C
High tides are higher than usual, low tides are lower than usual

9 Neap Tides Form when the moon, sun, and Earth form a right angle
Figure 13 B & D High tides are lower than usual, low tides are higher than usual

10 Exit Slip What is the difference between waves and tides?
