4 Gallery Walk At each photograph, capture specific details you notice and things you wonder about. ex. Child is standing with a sign. I wonder why they are serious. What are they protesting? You will have 1 minute at each photo. You may not see each photo. Expectations: No need for conversations. I expect “zero” voice levels during this time. Image 1: Image 2: Image 3: Image 4: Image 5:

5 Discussion Cold call on students. Listen for inferences. Eg. You said you saw a picture about racial inequality. What specifically did you see that made you think this? You used your background knowledge to make an inference that the people in the photograph were fighting for racial equality. No picture has the word “race” in it, does it.

11 Discussion Continued What do all these photographs have in common?
Why are all of these people holding signs? What might be motivating all these people? Encourage students to think about the name of the unit. Move beyond the literal of what they see in photographs?

READ ALOUD FIRST TARGET.You are used to reading words to gather information about something, and today you “read” a different type of text. You looked at photographs to gather information. Turn and talk to a partner “based on the photographs you have looked at, what do you think the phrase taking a stand means? READ ALOUD SECOND TARGET. What do the words advantages and disadvantages mean? Discuss the prefix “dis” meaning opposite of something

Draw a line under your last entry on your Notice/Wonder Note-Catcher. Take a moment to SILENTLY look at the next photo. Jot down what you notice and wonder. 10 Minutes What is the big idea of what the photo are taking a stand about.

Who is taking a stand in this photo? (discuss the black girl taking a stand and the white girl) For this module, you are going to call something taking a stand when it has to do with trying to help people and not hurt people.

15 Taking a Stand: Frayer Model
Taking a stand means to go out of your way to express your belief in something. It means to stand up for what you believe in, not just keep quiet about your beliefs. Taking a stand has the characteristics of courage, boldness, bravery, conviction, strong beliefs, and action. KEEP UP WITH THIS HANDOUT!
