Presentation on theme: "  10/23/14 Journal Discussion Questions"— Presentation transcript:

1 10/23/14 Journal Discussion Questions Using your textbook or smart phone, please answer the following: 1. Please compare and contrast somatic cells and gametes. 2. What is the relationship between chromatin and chromosomes? 3. What is the relationship between sister chromatids and centromeres?

2 Please compare and contrast somatic cells and gametes.
Somatic cells – are any kind of body cell (stomach cell, nerve cell etc) Gametes – are sex cells (egg or sperm cells) What is the relationship between chromatin and chromosomes? Chromatin – is the loose form of DNA normally not seen Chromosomes – are the coiled and condensed form of DNA seen during Mitosis What is the relationship between sister chromatids and centromeres? Chromatids – are copies of DNA Centromeres – are the part in the middle of the chromatids holding them together.

5 Reminders Eaves’ Second Period students, do not purchase a ticket for the play during school on Fri, You MUST be in class. Root Quiz on Monday, ……..STUDY!!! Rough Draft of your Research plan is due tomorrow!! (page7) Start working on your Science Fair Laboratory Composition Notebook. Follow the instructions in your Science Fair packet carefully. It tells you exactly what to do and how to do it. (Page 8)

6 This and That Be sure to check our class website frequently!
Especially if you’ve been absent or will be absent. Get any handouts you missed or lost from the website.

7 QUIZ Clear your desks of everything Do NOT write on the quiz please
QUIZ Clear your desks of everything Do NOT write on the quiz please Use CAPITAL letters please Keep your answers covered If you need to make up a quiz due to an absence… come see me Tues or Thurs during PLC Flip it over when you are finished and hang on to it.

8 Today’s Objective: Objective: The Cell Cycle and the structure of DNA
and DNA Replication

10 DNA Power Point Notes Fill in the notes as we go through the power point
10

11 DNA DNA = DeoxyriboNucleic Acid
Short nucleic acid A polymer that stores genetic information Found in the chromosomes of all organisms Controls production of proteins depending on sequence of nitrogen bases Unit of structure = nucleotide

12 DNA Nucleotide – 3 parts A sugar – deoxyribose A phosphate group – PO4
A nitrogen base Draw the Picture

13 Nitrogen Bases Nitrogen Bases – name source for the nucleotides
2 different types: Purines – double ring Adenine Guanine Pyrimidines – single ring Cytosine Thymine

14 Nitrogen Bases Purines Pyrimidines Phosphate group Deoxyribose Adenine
Guanine Cytosine Thymine Phosphate group Deoxyribose

15 DNA Structure Double Helix (twisting ladder) – modeled by Watson & Crick 1953 Sides/backbone - alternating deoxyribose sugar & phosphate “Rungs” - nitrogen bases held together by hydrogen bonds

16 Can you tell me what each number represents
1. Can you tell me what each number represents Guanine Thymine Sugar (deoxyribose) phosphate 2 3 4

17 Base Pairing Base Pairing
The complementary bases always pair a certain purine with a certain pyrimidine Base A = adenine T = thymine C = cytosine G = guanine Complementary Base thymine adenine guanine cytosine

18 Base Pairing Rule: A always pairs with T C always pairs with G
Hydrogen bonds Nucleotide Sugar-phosphate backbone Key Adenine (A) Thymine (T) Cytosine (C) Guanine (G)

19 Finish the Chromosome Numbers Handout from Yesterday
Begin DNA – The Double Helix Activity -see me for the handout 19

20 Exit Ticket 1. Describe the base pairing rules.
2. Compare and contrast purines and pyrimidines. 3. How do you think DNA replicates itself. YouTube DNA Replication YouTube Crash Course Mitosis

21 Exit Ticket 1. Please describe the cell cycle phases and substages.
2. When does DNA Replication occur? YouTube Crash Course Mitosis
