Step One: SURVEY Skim text, don’t read Note bibliographic info Why?
title, author, date of publication, type of publication, length, subtitles Anticipation… making mental notes that lead to predictions

Step Two: PREDICT what will be discussed/covered?
what text will be about? is it biased? neutral? Always make at least 2 predictions

STOP!!!! Before the next step, read first paragraph
…last paragraph also? Only the intro… no arguments Gives you a better idea of what questions to ask

Step Three: QUESTION questions you think the author will answer/address in the text questions you want answered questions you have for the author based on survey and reading of only introduction (and maybe conclusion) always create at least 3 questions

Step Four: READ With the grain No notes Don’t stop
Gloss over unknown vocabulary Read for basic understanding of whole text As if you agree with the writer… you drank the Kool-Aid, too

Were questions answered? Relevant? New questions?

Step Five: RE-READ Highlight & Annotate Thesis
Vocabulary – unknown or strong Main Idea(s) Arguments Types of Evidence Appeals Talk to the text Important to show students HOW to highlight Students should have writing prompt in mind when highlighting… Teacher must give direction or this is a crapshoot

Step Six: RESPOND Responses will vary Summarize the article
What did you think before? After? Do you agree/disagree? Why?

“Title” = Title of Article and/or Bibliographic Entry “Notes” Section = Highlights “Questions” Section = Annotations “Summary” Section = Response

Practice Choose one of the editorials to SPQ3R 2 predictions
3 questions Highlights & Annotations Thesis 2 pieces of evidence Label type of evidence AND corresponding appeal Response: Do you agree/disagree? Why?
