4. Eric Arthur Blair (1903 – 1950), better known by his pen name, George Orwell, was an English novelist, essayist, journalist, and critic. His work is marked by awareness of social injustice, opposition to totalitarianism, and outspoken support of democratic socialism.
Orwell wrote literary criticism, poetry, fiction, and journals. He is best known for the novel, Animal Farm and the dystopian book 1984.
Orwell was a police officer in Burma for the British, a teacher for a few years, fought in the Spanish Civil War in the late 1930’s and was injured in battle, and worked for the British Broadcasting Company during World War II. He died of tuberculosis at age 46.
