1 Sales Meeting Jan 12,2017 B50 life Engine Overspeeds
Correct oil change techniques for DD Engines

2 B50 Life Engine Manufacturers use B50 as a way to express the expected life of an engine B50 states the mid point of expected overhaul life. Half will need overhaul before that point, half will need overhaul after that point Overhaul means the removal of the oil pan and cylinder head to renew cylinder components B50 does not include breakdowns or catastrophic failures

3 B50 Bell Curve

4 B50 life factors Duty Cycle! Heavy loads shorten life
High road speeds shorten life You can almost equate life to gallons of fuel burned Maintenance factors like frequency of oil changes and quality of oil and filter products influence engine life Extremes of temperature, altitude, dusty conditions and geography affect engine life

5

6 B50 life B50 is not a guarantee that the engine will reach that goal
Best message is that all engines advertise B50 lives that are very close Winning or losing a deal on B50 shows that we did not do a good job of explaining what that number means How you run and maintain your truck has the most bearing on your opportunity to be on the high side of B50

7 B50 versus B10 DD5 life is rated B10 at 400,000 miles
10% of the engines would need overhaul before 400,000 miles If a comparable engine had a B50 of 400,000 50% of the engines would need overhaul before 400,000 miles Clear advantage for the B10 engine!

8 Engine Overspeed

9 Engine Overspeed DD engines produce the best performance and fuel economy between 1000 and 1500 RPM. We want the customer to operate the engine in that range We allow engine brake operation up to 2200 RPM Virtual Technician sends an notice when the RPM exceeds RPM and again at 2500 RPM Those notices are there to address DRIVER ABUSE and prevent engine damage Nothing to fix with a wrench (except when used to hit the driver)

10 Engine Overspeed Engine speeds above 2300 RPM occur when the driver allows the weight of the vehicle and the downgrade of the road to push the engine RPM beyond 2300 Driver must use the service brakes to control the speed of the vehicle and prevent engine overspeed Engine overspeed can occur at almost any vehicle speed Engine overspeed can occur with or without engine brake operation

11 Engine Overspeed DT12 transmissions downshift aggressively when the engine brakes are applied Once you apply the engine brake, DT12 downshifts to provide the best braking DT12 WILL NOT upshift once the engine brakes are applied. It will maintain that gear to ensure the safety of the driver and vehicles around the truck Manual Transmission will not upshift without driver intervention either!

12 Engine Overspeed Early in the DT12 lifetime, everyone blamed the DT12 aggressive downshift strategy for engine overspeeds VT was modified to send an at 2300 RPM Software was upgraded that will not allow a downshift if the RPM AFTER the shift will be greater than 2200 What we have found in investigation with fleets is that the overspeed incidents are higher with manual transmissions than they are with DT12 Driver must control the engine speed with service brakes if engine brakes are not enough

13 Engine Overspeed If you have a customer with engine overspeed concerns, we can pull a lot of information off Virtual Technician to help identify where and when the overspeed occurred This information is vital in helping to train the driver

16 Engine Overspeed Summary
Nothing wrong with the engine Driver needs to be educated Driver has probably done this for years in other trucks and we never had a way to catch them doing to Call me and I can work with your to identify when and where the offense occurred We can train the driver to prevent engine damage

17 DD Engine oil change

18 DD Engine oil change procedure
Oil and filter changes seem like a pretty straight forward operation, but you can make some serious errors that can lead to catastrophic engine failures NOT covered by warranty Choosing a good service provider or training your own personnel to do the job correctly is vital Once a tech understands the important points of the operation, he will find the process easy to perform in a professional fashion

19 DD Engine oil change Don’t do the fuel filters, engine oil and oil filters all at once. When you change the fuel filters, you must run the engine RPM up to clear the air out of the fuel. That’s terrible on a dry oil system One visit, two events: Change the fuel filters and run the engine. Then change the oil and oil filters

20 DD Engine oil change Clean the oil filter cap and surrounding area so you don’t knock any dirt into the filter housing. Loosen the oil filter cap. That allows the valve to open in the bottom of the filter housing and the dirty oil to run into the pan Pull the filter On some chassis, the air filter interferes with oil filter removal. May have to loosen the air filter housing for access VISUALLY INSPECT THE INSIDE OF THE FILTER HOUSING TO MAKE SURE YOU DID NOT KNOCK ANY DIRT INTO THE OIL FILTER HOUSING

21 DD Engine oil change Inspect the oil filter standpipe for a damaged bypass valve. If the valve is damaged, the oil is bypassing the filter and not getting filtered. EVER! Valve can be damaged when removing oil filter

22 DD Engine oil change Use the correct filter!
Manufacturers cannot call out brand name on filters. It’s against the law. They can state their part number or “equivalent” Hengst Filters sold by Detroit Diesel or Freightliner meet the specs Donaldson filter that are a re-boxed Hengst filter meet the spec Some “name brand” filters DO NOT meet the specs and may cause serious engine damage not covered by warranty MBE 4000 filters will fit the housing but are not approved

23 Detroit / Hengst brand is not the only acceptable HDEP oil filter
The Hengst design filter is protected by a US patent Equlivant Reboxed or Rebranded oil filters should have the Hengst patent number. (RE38, 917E 6,086,763) Department

24 DD Engine oil change Drain the oil Refill the oil
Run the engine at idle and check for leaks Stop the engine for 20 minutes Check and adjust the oil level

25 DD Engine oil change If you do the oil and filter changes correctly, you should have a very good chance to live a good B50 life! However…..

26 DD Engine oil change When you don’t clean the filter area and knock dirt into the housing, it’s 8” from the dirt on the clean side of the filter to the main bearings

27 DD Engine oil change The debris get trapped between the crankshaft and main bearing, spins the main bearing and cuts off oil to the rod= rod through block
