Intra-individual fluctuation in the presence of mechanical symptoms during 12-month follow-up. The presence of mechanical symptoms was elicited preoperatively and then at 2, 6 and 12 months postoperatively for the subgroup 339 patients with complete data. Of the 221 patients reporting preoperative mechanical symptoms, 74 (33%) were symptom-free for the entire 12-month follow-up. Intra-individual fluctuation was observed during the follow-up period, particularly among the patients with preoperative mechanical symptoms but also among those with no preoperative mechanical symptoms. A green symbol denotes no mechanical symptoms and red denotes mechanical symptoms at the time of follow-up.
