Applications of Matrix Multiplication
Suffolk Community College and Stony Brook University are both state institutions and must order equipment from the same supplier. They each have women’s softball teams. Suffolk’s team needs 12 bats, 45 balls, and 15 gloves. Stony Brook’s team needs 15 bats, 38 balls, and 17 gloves. Each bat costs $375, each ball costs $6, and each glove costs $110. Set up two matrices: one for cost of items and one for equipment needed. Then multiply the two matrices to find the cost of equipment for each team.
