Definition= pride in one’s own country, customs, ideas, etc
Germany and Italy had only recently become independent countries.
Native inhabitants in colonized countries start to revolt against imperialistic countries
European countries have different ethnicities, so nationalism is confused

Rise of new machines for warfare, professional militaries
Glorification of war and increase in military spending
Germany military most powerful; though England has best Navy

8. V. Alliances Initially, friendly and defensive agreements
Goal= to stay out of war!
