2 The Constitution of the United States of America establishes and protects the citizens’ fundamental rights and liberties.

3 First Amendment freedoms
Religion: Government may not establish an official religion, endorse an official religion, or unduly interfere with the free exercise of religion.

4 First Amendment freedoms
Speech: Individuals are free to express their opinions and beliefs.

5 First Amendment freedoms
Press: The press has the right to gather and publish information, including that which criticizes the government.

6 First Amendment freedoms
Assembly: Individuals may peacefully gather.

7 First Amendment freedoms
Petition: Individuals have the right to make their views known to public officials.

8 The Fourteenth Amendment
Extends the due process protection to actions of the states

9 Due Process The idea that the government must treat citizens fairly. This is especially true in legal proceedings (court hearings, contracts, carrying out the law).
