Natural Phenomena and Ecosystems
(Sec 5.1 pg ) VIDEO (Crash Course – Succession)
2
Natural events are not caused by humans
Natural events are not caused by humans. They include things like volcanoes, floods, storms, etc. Natural events can have a range of impact on ecosystems – from minor to huge.
3
Recovery can be immediate, or take decades or centuries (full cycle of secondary succession)
4
Natural phenomena can have positive AND negative effects on ecosystems
Weather-related phenomena = when a change in the climate causes a change in the species that survive (warmer winters, hotter summers, etc); or when extreme weather events have major impacts on ecosystems. SEE TABLE 1 P.109 (and understand it!) Hurricane Katrina
6
Natural phenomena can have positive AND negative effects on ecosystems
Geological-related phenomena = when geological activity in Earth’s crust impacts ecosystems (e.g. volcanoes, earthquake, etc.) SEE TABLE 2 P.111 (understand it!) Mt St Helens
