1 The Solubility Product Constant
SCH 4U1 Mr. Dvorsky Tuesday May 24th 2011

2 Weak electrolyte: salts with relatively low solubility

3 Salt: The word salt refers not only to table salt but any ionic compound (except for the hydroxides which are bases). Substances that dissolve readily at room temperature in a solvent are said to be soluble. Solubility is defined as the maximum amount of a solute that will dissolve in a given amount of solvent at a given room temperature.

In grade 11 Chem, you learned about solubility. i.e. Experiments to figure out how much solute would dissolve in a solvent. –using solutes with high solubility you could add a visible amount of solute and make it dissolve forming an unsaturated solution. When you could dissolve no more solute, you had prepared a saturated solution. =dynamic equilibrium between undissolved solute and dissolved solute.

6 The lesson from here moves to the whiteboard.
