What are the Balkans? Who was killed in Bosnia – Herzgovina in June 1914? Name the countries which made up the Balkans. What did Serbia want from Austria- Hungary? Why was Russia protecting Slavs (people who live in Serbia?) Why was there a problem for AH in the Balkans? Why do you think the heir to the AH throne was killed in Serbia? Why did Russia support Serbia?

Complete the map and key to show who was in each alliance For each country on your map look at their data on the table given and give them a score out of 5 for their strength. (5 is the strongest) Which side looks stronger? Explain your answer!

Each army was building up it’s army and empire from 1898 on wards Look at the facts at the bottom of page 16 and your time line! Explain how militarism would make war more likely!
