Indirect Characterization
4
Direct Characterization
Authors use direct characterization to illustrate what a character looks like, acts like and so forth. The author tells the reader or another character in the story may tell… but the key is “tell.” Bill is cute. Jack is friendly. Bill has blonde hair and brown eyes. Jill has dark hair, wears no make-up, and likes to dance.
5
Indirect Characterization
The author or other characters show what a character is like. The author or other characters show through thoughts, words, or deeds. Indirect Characterization often leaves a deeper impression on the readers. “As Jill crept past the box labeled ‘Free Puppies,’ she slyly glanced around her, then gave the box a swift kick.” What do we learn about Jill? “First of all,” he said, “if you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you’ll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view […] until you climb into his skin and walk around in it” (Lee To Kill a Mockingbird) What do we learn about Atticus and Scout?
