Dysregulated expression of glucose metabolic enzymes is associated with poor prognosis of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma Xiaoli Zhang, PhD. Department of Biomedical Informatics, The Ohio State university

2 Introduction Liver cancer is the second leading cause of cancer related death worldwide because of limited therapeutic options, where hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) accounts for over 80% of liver cancer cases. It is highly malignant, recurrent, drug resistant, and often diagnosed at the advanced stage. The enzymes within the glucose metabolic pathways have been shown to be essential for the growth and survival of cancer cells. The accelerated aerobic glycolysis in tumor has been considered one of the hallmarks that distinguish cancer cells from normal cells. Liver cancer cells reprogram their metabolic pathways to meet their needs for rapid proliferation and generation of the biomass for tumor growth.

3 Objective Using liver hepatocellular cancer dataset of the Cancer Genome Atlas (LIHC TCGA) to investigate how the expression of genes in glucose metabolic pathways are altered how the alterations are associated with patient clinical stage, overall survival, and recurrence free survival in liver cancer with the ultimate goal to identify biomarkers for the development of personized medicine to treat liver cancer.
