Typical Junior High Day
Bus pickup around 7:30 a.m. School begins at 8:10 a.m. 6 classes each day– 4 academics and 2 electives Each class is approximately 55 minutes long 6 minute passing time between classes There are 4 lunch periods between 10:41 – 12:26 Each lunch is 25 minutes long School ends at 3:01 p.m.

Curriculum Choices - English
continued development in reading and the writing process Accelerated English – strong writing and reading skills requires good time management and organization includes increased workload, independent learning and more stringent grading system **Parent signature on the course selection sheet is required for ALL accelerated courses.

Geography – study relationships between people and the environment Accelerated Geography – geographical skills reinforced and expanded requires good time management and organization includes increased workload, independent learning and more stringent grading system **Parent signature on the course selection sheet is required for ALL accelerated courses.

Curriculum Choice - Science
Physical Science - 7 – laboratory and measuring techniques chemistry principles, physics and earth sciences

Math Placement Grades in 6th grade math or Advanced Math 100
NWEA math score Parent & student will be notified by the elementary school in late spring.

Curriculum Choices – Math Determined by district rubric
focus on pre-algebra skills for 8th grade math Advanced Math 7 – covers Math 7 and 8 in one year prepares students for high school Algebra I in 8th grade Algebra I – students who have successfully completed Advanced Math 7 or qualify based on district requirements

Will accelerated courses be a good fit?
Good attendance Active participant Little to no missing/late assignments Well organized Independent learner Love of subject Strong work ethic Caution urged when considering more than two accelerated courses

Homework: Striking a Healthy Balance
Expect 10 minutes per grade level 7th grade = 70 minutes 8th grade = 80 minutes 9th grade = 90 minutes *For each Accelerated/Honors/AP Course add 20 minutes

Required 7th Grade Elective
Physical Education/Health - 10 weeks of PE activities including team sports and other leisure-time activities 10 weeks of classroom health curriculum including life-long decision making skills

Elective Choices – Full Year
Band – wind, brass and percussion includes after-school performances Computer Science Discoveries introductory computer science course that focuses on tools and programming language

Elective Choices - Semester
Digital Literacy & Media Design (DLMD) – project-based learning incorporating current technologies only available in 7th grade Exploratory Language – introduction to French, German, Japanese and Spanish Exploratory Design & Engineering I (EDE)– basic fundamentals of mechanical, architectural and engineering design

Intro to Art – variety of media, both 2-D and 3-D techniques may be taken once in 7th or 8th grade Intro to Drawing and Design – 2-D techniques using pencil and ink Drama – basics of acting and fundamentals of stagecraft Vocal Music – group singing, choreography and music theory includes after-school performances

Completing the Schedule Form
Students should circle their choice for English and Geography Parent signature is required for accelerated courses Families will be contacted regarding math placement Electives should be numbered 1 through 6, with 1 being the highest preference

Junior High sports Fall – Football, Sideline Cheerleading, Girls’ Volleyball Winter – Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball, Competitive Cheerleading Spring – Boys’ and Girls’ Track A physical, dated after April 15, 2018, is a MUST for tryouts Completed forms given to coach on the first day of tryouts NO tryouts during the summer
