1 Multiplication Patterns

2 Starter Complete the table… x 10 ÷ 10 ÷ 100 ÷ 1000 50 5 0.5 0.05 0.005
Start Number ÷ 10 ÷ 100 ÷ 1000 50 5 0.5 0.05 0.005 270 27 2.7 0.27 0.027 4 0.4 0.04 0.004 0.0004

3 Multiplication Patterns
This lesson we will be looking at working out answers to difficult sums more easily… Multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000 is essential to these ‘shortcuts’

4 Multiplication Patterns
Learning Objectives All will be able to multiply a whole number by a decimal to one place (Level 5) Most will be able to multiply two 1 digit decimals together (Level 5/6) Some will be able to multiply decimals of any number of decimal places together (Level 6)

5 Multiplication Patterns
14 x 2 = 28 Same ÷ 10 ÷ 10 14 x 0.2 = 2.8

6 Multiplication Patterns
12 x 6 = 72 Same ÷ 10 ÷ 10 12 x 0.6 = 7.2

7 Multiplication Patterns
3 x 15 = 45 ÷ 10 Same ÷ 10 0.3 x 15 = 4.5

8 Multiplication Patterns
2 x 12 = 24 ÷ 10 ÷ 10 ÷ 100 0.2 x 1.2 = 0.24

9 Multiplication Patterns
7 x 7 = 49 ÷ 10 ÷ 10 ÷ 100 0.7 x 0.7 = 0.49

10 Multiplication Patterns
13 x 2 = 26 Same ÷ 10 ÷ 10 13 x 0.2 = 2.6

11 Multiplication Patterns
8 x 9 = 72 ÷ 10 Same ÷ 10 0.8 x 9 = 7.2

12 Multiplication Patterns
15 x 5 = 75 x 10 ÷ 10 Same 150 x 0.5 = 75

13 Multiplication Patterns
7 x 3 = 21 ÷ 100 ÷ 10 ÷ 1000 0.07 x 0.3 = 0.021

14 Plenary

15 Summary We have learnt how to solve harder multiplications
This can be done by changing the sums to small whole numbers, and working out how they have ‘changed’
