ATP and ADP
2
SC912.L.18.10 Connect the role of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to energy transfer within a cell. 1. Define adenosine triphosphate and adenosine diphosphate 2. Describe how energy can be stored and released from ATP
3
Energy Currency Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) stores and releases energy during cell processes, enabling organisms to function.
4
When a bond between the phosphate groups is broken, energy is released which is used by the cell to provide the energy needed to drive the chemical reactions that enable an organism to function.
5
With the addition of a third phosphate group, ADP is converted to ATP for the storage of energy.
The ATP molecule is broken down to ADP due to a reaction with water, and energy is released.
