Cell Structure and Function
Organelles
2
Warm Up In your journal, compare and contrast prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Use 2-3 complete sentences. Be prepared to share your responses.
3
ANALOGIES An analogy recognizes how two different things can be alike in some way. People create analogies to help understand complex ideas. Review the following pictures and think about how the individual pieces contribute to the room’s overall function.
4
Relate functions to jobs
Relate functions to jobs. What job/function does the oven do in the kitchen?
5
Relate functions to jobs
6
Relate functions to jobs
7
What is necessary for this cell to function?
8
ORGANELLES / SUB STRUCTURES
Cells must perform functions to survive. These functions occur in tiny structures (sub structures) called organelles found inside the cell. Organelles are eukaryotic cell structures with specific functions. They enable cells to carry out different functions at the same time.
9
CELL MEMBRANE Protects the cell by selectively allowing materials to enter and leave the cell. Classroom analogy - door
10
Stores water and other liquids, food and waste.
VACUOLE Stores water and other liquids, food and waste. Classroom analogy - cabinet
11
Controls all cell activities, including reproduction.
NUCLEUS Controls all cell activities, including reproduction. - “Brain” of the cell. Classroom analogy - teacher
12
Some chemical changes occur here.
CYTOPLASM Holds all organelles. Some chemical changes occur here. General analogy - jello with fruit in it
13
Converts food and oxygen into energy that is used by the cells.
MITOCHONDRIA Converts food and oxygen into energy that is used by the cells. “Powerhouse” of the cell Classroom analogy - electrical socket
14
Classroom Analogy

Why do all of the organelles need to work together?
REFLECTION In your journal, reflect on the following question. Write 2-3 complete sentences based on what you learned today. Why do all of the organelles need to work together?
