ASTRONOMY CP PHYSICS TOPICS 1ST SEMESTER
4
EXPECTATIONS Students will be: on time prepared for class
respectful of others giving their best effort honest CONTRACT SENT HOME daily assignments need to be completed
5
Instructional Goals Students will learn about essential concepts in Physics Students will be able to demonstrate competent lab skills Students will be able to demonstrate critical thinking skills to problem solve Students will be able to demonstrate the use of technology to communicate results ESSENTIAL CONCEPTS FROM NATIONAL STANDARDS
6
Class Structure Teacher facilitates learning of new material through examples, notes, class discussion Laboratories Projects Group Work Differentiated Instruction Units Use of Technology EMPHASIS ON STUDENTS READING THE MATERIAL AND TAKING NOTES PRIOR TO CLASS.
7
Differentiated Instruction is…
Custom-designing instruction based on student needs. Modifying the content, process activities, or products developed by the students. Learners are assessed on their readiness levels, learning profile (multiple intelligence styles), and interest. GARDNER’S MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES RESEARCH FINDINGS
8
Why Differentiate? Allows students a choice in the activity or assessment to utilize their strengths and interests as a learner. Gives the students a sense of ownership in their learning. Creates multiple pathways for students to meet their individual needs. Research indicates students learn differently. INCREASE STUDENT INTEREST AND MOTIVATION TO LEARN
9
Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences
Musical intelligence Logical-mathematical intelligence Spatial intelligence Bodily-Kinesthetic intelligence Intra-personal intelligence Inter-personal intelligence Linguistic intelligence Give several examples to parents
10
“It's not how smart you are, it's how you are smart!”
—Howard Gardner EVERY STUDENT HAS STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES WE NEED TO HAVE THEM USE THEIR PERSONAL STRENGTHS
11
What does Differentiated Instruction Include?
Pre-assessment of student readiness Instruction based on student readiness Core concepts for all Interesting tasks for all students Teacher acts as facilitator for learning Goal setting by students Student Choice in type of assessment PRE-ASSESSMENT QUESTIONAIRES core concepts from national standards
12
Types of Tasks/Strategies
Independent Projects Tiered Assignments Curriculum Compacting Flexible Grouping Learning Contracts NOT A COMPLETE LIST
13
Independent Projects Student and teacher plan method of investigation and type of product Allow student flexibility to plan based on readiness, personal interests Provide structure and direction for high level of student production Usually end of year activities
14
Tiered Assignments Are adjusted by complexity, number of steps, and level of independence. Allows for extension of concepts based on student readiness. Students use a variety of approaches to explore core concepts.
15
Curriculum Compacting
Plans to learn concepts that are not known by the student and excuses student from what they do know. Eliminates boredom from practice of concepts already mastered by the student. Pre-assessment of student knowledge done before start of unit. Motivates those with some level of prior knowledge to go in depth of an area of interest
16
Flexible Grouping Allows teacher to instruct children on basis of interests and needs. Teacher assigned when task is designed to meet student interests or readiness. Student selected when task is well suited for peer selection. Allows students to become proficient in collaborating with others. Who chooses depends on the activity
17
Learning Contracts Eliminates unnecessary skill practice
Helps students learn planning skills Allows students to work at an appropriate pace Utilize a hybrid of student skill level and interests Pre assessment is critical
18
Importance of Technology
Allows students and teachers to communicate Students have a wide range of information available Provides opportunities for students to practice and expand skills Enriches learning through discovery Allows students to express results in creative ways
19
Types of Technology Class Moodle site Class Webliography Web Quests
Simulators Wiki’s Videos Powerpoint presentations
20
Assessing Student Learning
Formative Assessment Summative Assessment Old school and new school
21
Formative Assessment Ongoing evaluation of student learning before, during and after instruction. Allows teacher to identify student needs quickly and give immediate feedback to student. Feedback critical to help the learning process
22
Summative Assessment Assessment occurs at end of unit.
Assessments may be formal or authentic. Will vary depending on unit
23
Formal Assessments Models traditional exams Quantitative in nature
Models prelims found in college course Teaches traditional test taking skills Still a need for senior students going to college
24
Types of Formal Assessments
Quiz Test Lab Report To prepare for schools of higher learning
25
Authentic Assessment Allows student to demonstrate their understanding through a variety of observable indicators. Lets students use their personal strengths in their mode of assessment. Gives the teacher a more in depth look into a students understanding of a concept. More creative assessments to bring out personality of the learner and their strengths
26
Types of Authentic Assessments
Demonstration Skit Video Portfolio Independent Project Laboratory Experiment Other technology based projects Or others per instructor approval
27
Grading Grades are based on total points earned
Each assignment has a designated point total based on type of assignment Grades are posted on classroll Students and Parents should check grades weekly Points assigned to balance work load
28
Make –Up / Extra Help Before School each morning 7:00am-7:45
After School on Tuesday afternoons By appointment Sign up sheet on front desk Students responsibility …. School attendance policy withstanding unex abs =no make up
