What can that possibly mean?

An “ism” is a suffix at the end of many English words. It comes from Greek “ismos” and Latin “ismus”.
You have seen it at the end of words like optimism, Buddhism, racism, favoritism, and terrorism.

It signifies a belief, practice, idea, or movement. In art, there are many movements that end in ism.
One of the most important ISMs is Cubism.

Cubism was a movement that began in France in the early 20th Century by Spanish artist Pablo Picasso and French artist Georges Braque.

Cubism rejected the idea of using perspective to create art as seen in nature. It was geometric and two dimensional.
Objects were broken apart and the pieces could be viewed from all sides.

Frida Kahlo and her artist husband both dabbled in cubism. But, she is better known for her Mexican Modernism artwork.

leading artist of the 20th century.

explore and change throughout
his career.

16. Marcel Duchamp Duchamp practiced cubism, but was a
Pioneer of Dada. The Dada movement
questioned what art should be. He became
known for presenting everyday objects as art.
Bicycle Wheel was the first of
Duchamp’s Readymades. Reacymades are sculptures made from everyday objects.

Mondrian’s artwork evolved from traditional to abstract.
