Merchant Backstory: Although he is very good at his job, he is in debt because of his desire to possess very expensive items. “…none knew he was in debt” “He was expert in dabbling in exchanges”

Merchant Speaks and acts: The Merchant is a very secretive person, he lies about how much money he has and he is “an expert in dabbling in exchanges.” “To tell you the truth, I do not know his name” “none knew he was in debt”

Merchant How he thinks and feels: He kept to himself mostly, not telling people about his personal life but he talked a lot of politics and told of his beliefs. “He told of his opinions and pursuits” “there should be sea-police”

Merchant Looks and Dresses: He had a forking beard, motley dress, Flemish beaver hat and daintily buckled boots. “There was a merchant with a forking beard and motley dress” “Upon his head a Flemish beaver hat and on his feet daintily buckled boots”

Parson Backstory: A well educated man who believes getting to God is the most important thing. “He was a learned man” “His business was to show a fair behavior and draw men thus to Heaven and their savior”

Parson Speaks and acts: He is very well educated and doesn’t judge men by their sins. He does all of his work on his own, assuming that man should suffer first before enlightenment. “He was a learned man” “He did not set his benefice to hire”

Parson Thinks and feels: Religious, but he also thinks that priests are better than the common people. “A holy minded man” “That if gold rust, then what will iron do? For if a priest be foul in whom we trust no wonder that a common man should rust”

Parson Looks and Dresses: Wields a staff and assumption of priest like robes. “…and in his hand a stave”
