BOYLE COUNTY FOOTBALL CHARACTERISTICS OF SUCCESSFUL COACHING/DEFENSIVE LINE PLAY
2
Characteristics of Successful Coaches
1. Establish Trust 2. Direct Perspective 3. Manage People 4. Ensure Preparation 5. Provide Discipline and Accountability
3
They Establish Trust Trust is the most essential thing to establish as a coach. Players will not follow you completely until they can trust you completely., “They don’t care what you know until they know that you care.”
4
They Direct Perspective
Coaches foresee the thoughts and emotions that will be generated by an upcoming challenge. Then, they redirect the team’s mindset away from fears and worries by reminding everyone of their strengths and focusing the attention on the task at hand. They know how to engineer and finagle their “Why”
5
They Manage People They said you have to use your five best players, but you win championships with the five players that fit together the best. The best coaches arrange a collection of individuals into a harmonious whole,(team). Great coaches get the right players in the correct position for the better of the team. There must be great team chemistry to win a championship.
6
They Ensure Preparation
The best coaches begin preparing their players long before they actually compete in a game. “Champions may be recognized during the course of a championship game, but they are made months in advance.” You must deserve to win a championship long before you ever actually win it. You have to prepare to be a champion; it is the hardest thing you have ever done.
7
They Provide Discipline and Accountability
Coaches set expectations for the team and for individuals and then inspire their players to live up to those standards. It takes great sacrifice and great leadership to win a championship!
8
Rules for Success Train your mind- Interpretation of nervousness; convince yourself it is excitement. Push the Rules-The rule is you can go after what you want, you just can’t deny anyone else from going after what they want. Be patient – Life, relationships, career performance is a journey, be patient. You have to work hard everyday to stay in love. Take Accountability for your Actions- Sometimes you are the problem. You can except credit as long as you are willing to except responsibility when you are the problem.
9
Rules for Success(cont.)
Out do Yourself- “Finite Players” play to beat players around them. Finite-Has boundary and limits “Infinite Players”-play to beat themselves daily. You are your competition. Infinite-Exceeding great. Stack the Deck- Surround yourself with people who believe what you believe. Then trust develops.
10
Rules for Success(cont.)
Be the last to speak- Great Leader Nelson Mandela said two things: Always sit in a circle. Be the last to speak- the skill to hold your feelings to the end does two things. (If you agree do not nod yes and if you disagree do not nod no) 1. Gives everyone a chance to speak and be heard, they feel they have contributed. 2. You get the ability to hear what everyone else thinks before you give your opinion. Be Authentic- You have to actually do the things you actually believe. They are the symbols of who you are. You will attract people who believe what you believe and it builds trust.
11
Rules for Success(cont.)
Find your Passion- You would do it for free. You cannot believe someone pays you to do this. Start with why. People don’t buy WHAT you do they buy WHY you do it. You are driven by a Cause, A Purpose, a Belief. What is your Cause, Purpose, Belief that is your Why.

PASS RUSH PHILOSOPHY You must have excellent technique, pride, and a full knowledge of the blocker. We have two objectives. 1- Sack the QB 2- Create pressure to disrupt his rhythm and timing Do not get hung up on the blocker. You must use your hands effectively. Do not allow the blocker to get into your chest or legs
17
THE 10 COMMANDMENTS OF PASS RUSH
A player must have a predetermined move. This will enhance the quickness of the move and make the move very crisp and sharp. Get off the ball by anticipating the ball movement. Always attack a half man; never attack the man head on because the goal of the lineman is to stay between the defense and the QB. The pass rusher must close the distance between himself and the blocker. Hands and feet must be moving explosively up the field at all times.
18
THE 10 COMMANDMENTS OF PASS RUSH (CONT.)
6. Anticipate the blocker shooting their hands. 7. The pass rusher must always keep the hands of the offensive lineman off their body. 8. Players must be quick and violent with their hands, remembering to knock the opposing lineman's hands away from their body. 9. Always maintain good body lean, keeping his shoulders over his toes 10. Get the offensive lineman’s shoulders turned, and step through, by stepping behind his foot assuring that he does not recover the block
19
PASS RUSH TECHNIQUE 1. Shake and Rip- Can be used when “contain-rushing” or “free-rushing.” You will need to be full speed before contact in order to get your shoulders past the blocker. Get off on the snap. Drive your eyes to the inside shoulder of the blocker. At the last second, make an inside jab-push off the inside foot- lower your inside shoulder pad- bolt through his outside shoulder to the QB with a ripping motion. You are not trying to run over the blocker, but are setting him up, then breaking through the opposite shoulder. You must always progress to the QB. Keep in mind you must keep your outside arm and leg free at all times when in a contain-rush. Once you have successfully gotten past the blocker, look for the QB , get control, and do not overrun him. Remember you may not be completely clean of the blocker, but don’t let him drive you past the QB.
20
PASS RUSH TECHNIQUE 2. Fit and Rip or Swim – Do not get your body into the blocker. If you do, he has the opportunity to take away your momentum or knock you off your rush you must use your hands. Shock your opponent with a Hand Strike and pull past him. 3. Speed - Momentum and speed are vital in defeating the blocker. Key the ball so that you get a great jump on the blocker. Us the blockers momentum with a fake to unbalance him. Beat him with the least amount of contact possible.
21
PASS RUSH TECHNIQUE 4. Power Rush – Get pads under the blocker and knock him into the QB. C.P. – Never let up or relax on the rush. The QB may pull the ball down at the last second, so keep coming hard until the ball has been released, then break to the football. C.P. – Never leave your feet to bat the ball down. Get your hands up and , but keep coming.
