1 UNIT 9 Energy and Reactions

2 Notes – Energy changes and Reaction rates
Consider the following reaction. Do you think energy is absorbed or released by the system to cause this change? Hydrogen gas reacts with oxygen gas to produce water vapor Agenda: Warm up Intro to the world of chemistry – Episode 13 – the driving forces of reactions Notes – Energy changes and Reaction rates Complete WS: Heat and endothermic / exothermic reactions Presentations if time allows Homework: Complete any unfinished work. Preread the Lab for next class. OBJECTIVES Students will use models to determine how energy is transferred during exothermic and endothermic reaction based on the absorption of energy (when bonds break) and the release of energy (when bonds form).

3 Crash Course – Energy & Chemistry
Warm up: 1. Look at the figure and decide if it represents and endothermic or exothermic reaction. Explain. Agenda: Warm up Crash Course – Energy & Chemistry Lab – Determining if a reaction is endothermic or exothermic Post lab and conclusion questions at seats. (Turn in when done) Homework: Endothermic VS Exothermic Reactions 2. The formation of water is represented by the equation below. Decide if it is endothermic or exothermic reaction and explain. 2H2(g) + O2 (g)  2H2O(l) kJ OBJECTIVES Students will identify processes as endothermic or exothermic based on the temperature change that occurs during a reaction.

4 Agenda: Complete these statements by choosing the correct word
In an endothermic reaction, energy is released / absorbed and the surroundings heat up / cool down. The reactants have higher/lower energy than the products. Exothermic reactions result in a rise/fall in the temperature of the surroundings because the system absorbs/releases heat. The products have higher/lower energy than the reactants. Agenda: Warm up Intro to the world of chemistry – Episode 14 –molecules in action. Use Notes on Reaction Rates (Kinetics) to complete WS 2: Reaction Rates bring up when done 5. Homework: Collision POGIL OBJECTIVES Students will use the kinetic molecular theory to explain why varying conditions influence the rate of reaction.

5 1. What are the 5 factors that affect the rate of a reaction?
Warm up: 1. What are the 5 factors that affect the rate of a reaction? Agenda: Warm up Crash Course – Kinetics Lab – Investigating reaction rates with Alka-Seltzer Post lab and conclusion questions at seats. Turn in when done. Begin working on review sheets at end of unit packet if time allowed. 2. OBJECTIVES Students will measure and compare reaction rates while changing several variables. They will compare the affects of the variables on reaction rates to draw a conclusion about what speeds up a reaction.

6 Ted Ed how to speed up chemical reactions pHet – turn in when done.
Warm up: What is another word to describe the study of reaction rates? Why does decreasing the temperature slow a reaction? Why does increasing concentration increase the reaction rate? Agenda: Warm up Ted Ed how to speed up chemical reactions pHet – turn in when done. Complete Review worksheet Will be collected before quiz. 4. Homework: Quiz next class OBJECTIVES Students will complete an investigation to determine how temperature, concentration, and activation energy change the rate of a chemical reaction.

7 Warm up: Agenda: Kahoot Turn in Review sheets Quiz Polarity Packet
Warm up- KAHOOT Agenda: Kahoot Turn in Review sheets Quiz Polarity Packet Read page 1 – polarity notes Complete page 2 (both sides) – “Polarity WS” Use table of Electronegativity values from back of backet Use lewis structure review notes OBJECTIVES 1. Students will use models to determine how energy is transferred during exothermic and endothermic reaction based on the absorption of energy (when bonds break) and the release of energy (when bonds form). 2. Students will use the kinetic molecular theory to explain why varying conditions influence the rate of reaction.
