1 Motivational Interviewing: A Paradigm Shift
Karen Foxworth, LCPC Motivation can be understood not as something that one has but rather as something one does. It involves recognizing a problem, searching for a way to change, and then beginning and sticking with that change strategy. There are, it turns out, many ways to help people move toward such recognition and action. Miller, 1995

2 History Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a way of talking with people about change related to things we often have mixed feelings about – exercise, diet, alcohol and other drug use, relationship issues, risky sexual behaviors, school and job related concerns, spiritual practices, certain attitudes, and other issues we face in our lives.

3 PARTNERSHIP Showing real respect for the other person;assuming both of you have important input 1st Step- Pre- Contemplation- No Intention

4 ACCEPTANCE Shining a light on the good behavior; meeting at their level 2nd Step- Contemplation

5 COMPASSION Hanging in there with clients when they are hurting or struggling with an issue; doing whatever is in the person’s interest 3rd Step- Intent on taking action to address problem

6 EVOCATION “Calling forth” or asking client about things such as what makes them tick, what they already know, what’s important to them, how would they like their lives to be different. 4th Step-Action- Active Modification of behavior

7 Possible Cycle 5th=Maintenance- New Behaviors replaces old ones
6th- Relapse- Fall back to old patterns of behavior
