Privateer – a private individual who owned and commanded a ship that was authorized by the government for use of war to capture enemy merchant ships English – John Hawkins French Dutch

Buccaneering – can be considered both a pirate and privateer. The term buccaneer derives from the Caribbean Arawak word buccan, a wooden frame for smoking meat, preferably manatee . From this became derived in French the word boucane and hence the name boucanier for French hunters who used such frames to smoke meat Famous English buccaneer was Henry Morgan

Spain tried to protect her ships and colonies in the Caribbean by: Imposing economic sanctions Convoys /navy followed merchant ships Building of forts Upgraded their ships to be faster and lighter (armadillas)
