Sentence Structure

2 Sentence Structure English has an SVO (Subject – Verb – Object) sentence structure. Latin has an SOV (Subject – Object – Verb) sentence structure. Latin is a verb-final language.

3 SVO vs. SOV I ate a pie. I a pie ate.
I am stealing money from the rich. I from the rich money am stealing. He dies. He will soon be happy. He soon happy will be.

4 Articles Articles refer to the English ‘the’ or ‘a(n)’.
Articles do not exist in Latin. Therefore, the Latin rosa may represent the English ‘rose’, ‘the rose’, or ‘a rose’.
