Kinematic Analysis of Champlain Valley Structures
Group 3
2
Purpose Analyze the kinematics of Clay Point and Lone Rock Point …
Determine if the duplex model and the model for parallel formation of axial plane and cleavage can be applied on a large scale to the structures found in the Champlain Valley.
3
Location Champlain Valley 4 locations

Clay Point Average Measured Values Visual Interpretation
Cleavage Strike: 87.9º Cleavage Dip: 50.6º SE Slickenline Trend: 138º Slickenline Plunge: 33º Visual Interpretation Steep Cleavage Faulting Displacement Anticline folding
5
Relationship Between Cleavage, Slickenlines, and the Champlain Thrust Fault
Since slickenlines and poles to cleavage fall along the same plane, they are most likely associated with one force…compare with champlain thrust. The best fit line for the poles to cleavage and slickenlines is perpendicular to the champlain thrust fault orientation

Conclusion Compressional force caused by tectonic plates colliding to form the Greem Mountains Spaced cleavage formed perpendicular to this force The kinematics in the Champlain Valley are a response to the stress applied to the region The contrast in rock strengths allowed for both the duplex model and model for parallel axial plane/cleavage formation to explain the geologic formations found in the Mountains of the Champlain Valley. Spaced cleavage formed perp to compression similar to ax plane/cleavage model
