10-24-17 – Cambridge Changing Science
2
Do Now: Copy and attempt to answer the following essential question in your notebook.
How do scientific ideas change over time? How has new technology allowed scientists to add to scientific knowledge?
3
Video: David Gallo’s TED Talk
This is a short video clip of amazing underwater sea creatures. As you watch, think about why we only recently have been able to observe these creatures. ments/up-next
4
Video Discussion Why have we only recently (10 years ago) been able to observe these creatures? We recently developed the technology (e.g., cameras that can go deep underwater) to go underwater to observe these creatures.
5
Student Work Read the article “Fish with a See-Through Head” from through-head twice. On your first read, underline everything that describe the fish’s forehead. On the second read, circle everything scientists can do now that scientists couldn’t do 70 years ago. fish-video-vin
6
Examples of descriptions to underline:
See through forehead Tough like a clear canopy Full of clear liquid Covers the eye Examples of advancements to circle: Send cameras and other equipment Looking at a live specimen
7
In your notebook, create a T-chart like the one below:
Create a list of adaptations of the barreleyes and describe how they are helpful. Barreleye Adaptations How this is helpful
8
Read the article, “DNA detectives get teeth to talk”
As you read, write down examples of how scientists changed the way they looked at evidence.
9
Summary: Write this in your science notebook.
Scientific knowledge can change due to new technology which allows us to gather new evidence. Scientific knowledge can change due to new interpretations of evidence.
10
Exit Ticket: Answer on a notecard
Explain how better technology made scientists change their thinking about the barreleye fish. Use this sentence: “Scientists used to think ______________________ but now they know ____________________ because _____________________.
11
Homework: Find a Research Project Topic
Research another example of how scientific knowledge has changed throughout history, specifically because of technology or due to new interpretations. Come to class tomorrow with at least 2 sources (can be online or print)
