2 Important Questions (MLA Format)
What one thing do you think is important for your teacher to know about you? GOALS - What do you want to learn in this course? Be specific. THINK ABOUT YOUR LEARNING STYLE – How did your previous teachers help you in your learning? What did they provide you to help you understand something better? (e.g., writing frames, sentence starters, graphic organizers, exemplar work, sitting in the front of the class, moving around the classroom to show your learning, etc.) Why are you taking this course? (e.g., you want to go to university; you want to go to college; you want to work, etc.) -Write in full-sentences. -Write in the formal register. -First-person is allowed, but second-person is not. -Be clear which question you are answering.

3 Fill in the questionnaire.
I mean business... Avoid distractions from the learning (e.g., cell phones, headphones, etc.) Be on time for lesson. Every time you are late or not in class, means less learning you will accomplish. No food and drinks – water only; the cockroaches are coming! It is all about “respect” DO NOT take advantage of my kindness. Be ready to learn- good pen, pencil, paper and attitude. Fill in the questionnaire.

4 Expectations: At the start
I usually start my lessons with a small but important activity. The purpose of the activity is to: Help you understand what you will be doing in the rest of the lesson. Review what you have learned before and that you’ll continue learning. Get you to understand “Why you are learning what you are learning”

5 Expectations: Group Work
I use a lot of group work to help you understand ideas and what I am trying to teach you. Challenges and disagreements. Helps build your skills. Please talk to me sometime this week if this will be a problem for you.

7 Expectations: Participation
If you come to my class, be prepared to work and participate. Smile Don’t let me or your team or yourself down. You may be asked to leave if you are not fully participating in the lesson or positively contributing to the learning. “Look” like you’re happy to learn (e.g., If we’re reading as a class, then be focused on what we are reading, etc.) Take notes! It’s a university course.

8 Expectations: You cannot hand in your work late!
It is expected that you hand in your work on time. 10% late penalty. Keep the rough-copies of your work.

11 Marks Continued What is “entitlement”? What does it mean to be “entitled”? Are you entitled to get that you want? Everyone must work hard in order to achieve what they want. Complaining about the difficulty of the course and material means that you are not ready for this course. This course is meant to challenge you.

All of your course work (e.g., paragraphs, tests, essays, etc.) is 70% of your final grade. The final examinations are worth 30% of the final grade. Your mark can change constantly or it can remain the same. Reading Writing Oral Communication Media Studies

14 Submission Guidelines
Failure to follow these guidelines will result in work being handed back with a late penalty (-10%) Always write in pen (blue or black ink only). Always write legibly. Always use MLA format. Always staple in the upper left corner. Always staple in the correct order. Always indent (tab) at the beginning of every paragraph. Always underline titles of books if writing by hand (Lord of the Flies); always italicise titles of books if typing on the computer (Lord of the Flies) Always use “ ” for titles of articles , short stories, and poetry (“Global Warming Linked to Worse Flu Seasons”) Always use Times New Roman font. Font should always be size 12. Always cite your sources, even if you put it in your own words. [Automatic zero if you are caught plagiarizing.]

15 Additional Resources If your grammar is weak, I suggest you purchase one of the following books to help with your studies. All three books are by Betty Azar. They are in order (Basic, Intermediate, Advanced). Basic English Grammar Understanding and Using English Grammar Fundamentals of English Grammar E.B. White’s Elements of Style eslresources.ca **Please review the handout on your own. It is essential.

16 Picture ID Cards Picture ID cards are meant to be worn at school to verify your identity. It is a matter of safety. ID cards are important for signing out textbooks and library books. During a lockdown, it is important to have your ID card on you. Students must provide a valid ID card and be able to produce a valid ID card when asked by a staff member.
