2A.3 & 2B.2 Notes Measuring Matter
9/10/18
2
Density The mass of a substance per unit of volume
Density = Mass ➗ Volume Density is measured in grams per milliliter (g/mL) or grams per centimeter cubed (g/cm3) Mass is measured in grams (g) Volume is measured in milliliter (mL) or centimeter cubed (cm3)
3
Determining Mass Mass is measured on a scale
Mass and weight are two different things Weight is a measure of gravity Mass is a measure of the amount of matter in an object Your mass does not change
4
Determining Volume The amount of space a solid, liquid, or gas takes up. Volume = Length x Width x Height Water Displacement Measuring: Using a graduated cylinder filled with a specific amount water. You place the object inside and measure the difference in volume.

7
Matter How much space an object takes up. Solid Liquid Gas

9
Mixtures Two or more different substances that retain their own individual properties and are combined physically (mixed together) Mixtures can be separated by physical means Filtration, sifting, evaporation

11
Heterogeneous Mixtures
The mixture is not uniform throughout The mixture is unevenly distributed The substances are visibly distinguishable

13
Homogenous Mixture The mixture is uniform throughout
The substances are evenly mixed and can not be distinguished The substances are so small they can not be seen easily Also called a solution

15
Pure Substances A substance that can not be separated by physical means. Each pure substance has its own set of unique set chemical and physical properties which helps identifies it.

17
Element Can not be changed into simpler substances
Composed of one kind of atom These are found on the period table Ex.) Hydrogen, Oxygen, Carbon

19
Compounds Pure substances that are composed of two or more atoms that are chemically combined Compounds can only be changed into simpler substances by chemical changes. Ex.) Carbon Dioxide, Water, DNA
