EUROCITIES AIMS Ensure that urban affairs are placed high on the European Union’s policy agenda: Most decisions taken at EU level affect cities and their citizens. We take the lead to make the “Voice of large cities in Europe” heard. Promoting exchange of best practices and networking amongst Europe’s large cities (whilst having different cultural, socio-economic and political realities they share common challenges and solutions. We encourage our members to exchange their expertise, and to be proactive in shaping national and EU policy). Promoting transnational cooperation projects between its member cities across Europe, (we facilitate their coordination and help provide access to EU-funding). EUROCITIES ACTIVITIES
Lobbying the EU institutions We want to see a dynamic Europe that gives greater weight to cities in Community and national government policies. Our political action is steered towards all the European institutions: The European Commission, the European Parliament, the Committee of the Regions and the Council. Sharing expertises Therefore we co-ordinate a broad range of projects between EUROCITIES members. Our knowledge of urban challenges and successes, and the assessment of their trans-European dimension, is the basis of our political strategy. Monitoring progress and raising awareness We constantly assess and monitor our work in progress. We contribute to major events organised by our partners from the EU institutions. But managing our large network remains a necessity. Massimiliano Rumignani PWG on Urban Research

CONTEXT Eurocities main objective is to improve the quality of life in urban areas. Decision makers must be aware of the consequences or impacts of different possible policy options that are presented to them. Research can supply the knowledge to allow decision makers to make the most informed choices. The main challenge to be addressed is how can we make scientific know-how available to the policy debate. CITIES NEEDS COMPLEXITY, DYNAMICS AND DIVERSITY are characteristics of the large cities, for this reason simple solutions often are not able to achieve the planned aims. Cities have to cope with different and multi faceted problems; They need a lot of resources to implement high level research activities able to help them; They need to be aware of the existing research results and innovative ideas; They need to know which are possible policies and actions that can be undertaken to enhance the quality of life of their citizens.
