CHEMICAL INTERACTIONS INVESTIGATION 3: PARTICLES

KEY CONCEPTS MATTER IS MADE OF PARTICLES (atoms)
EVERY SUBSTANCE IS DEFINED BY A UNIQUE PARTICLE GAS IS MATTER- IT HAS MASS AND OCCUPIES SPACE (air is matter made of particles) “air” is made up of particles

KEY CONCEPTS GASES ARE COMPOSED OF WIDELY SPACED INDIVIDUAL PARTICLES IN CONSTANT MOTION THERE IS NOTHING BETWEEN GAS PARTICLES EXCEPT SPACE (the particles in air don’t touch each other).

KEY CONCEPTS GAS COMPRESSES WHEN FORCE IS APPLIED; GAS EXPANDS WHEN FORCE IS WITHDRAWN (air that is forced into a smaller space is compressed air) DURING COMPRESSION AND EXPANSION, THE NUMBER AND CHARACTER OF PARTICLES IN A SAMPLE OF GAS DO NOT CHANGE, THE SPACE BETWEEN THE PARTICLES DOES CHANGE.

KEY CONCEPTS WHEN THE FORCE HOLDING AIR IN A SMALLER SPACE IS REMOVED, THE AIR EXPANDS- TAKES UP MORE SPACE.
