1 Seasons Vocabulary

2 Revolve/Revolution Definition: Example 1: Example 2:
to move in a circular or curving course or orbit Example 1: Running around a track Example 2: Earth traveling around the sun every days=a year

3 Rotate/Rotation Definition: turning or spinning around a center point/axis Example 1: Spin around in a circle Example 2: Earth spins on its own axis every 24 hours=1 day

4 Equinox Definition: sun shines directly at 0* latitude; equal light on both hemispheres; day = night Example 1: Equal day and night Example 2: Fall-Sep 22/23 Spring-March 20/21

5 Solstice Definition: Example 1: Example 2:
When the sun is either at the highest or lowest point in the sky; 23*N latitude or 23*S latitude Example 1: Winter-longest night, shortest day Example 2: Summer-shortest night, longest day

6 Axis Definition: Example 1: Example 2:
The imaginary line between the north and the south pole that Earth rotates on. Example 1: car axle and tires Example 2: math-axis on an x-y coordinate plane

7 Equator Definition: Example 1: Example 2:
Imaginary line around the middle of Earth (0* latitude) that separates it into the northern and southern hemispheres. Example 1: Location of the tropical rainforest Example 2: Location of the warmest and wettest climates

8 Direct Definition: Example 1: Example 2:
moving from one place to another by the shortest way without changing direction or stopping: Example 1: looking right into a light-like in a dentist chair Example 2: the sun’s rays in the Northern hemisphere during the summer months-warmer temperature

9 Indirect Definition: Example 1: Example 2:
not straight; not following the shortest way Example 1: Sunlight beams shining through the window into a dark room Example 2: The sun’s rays in the Northern hemisphere during the winter months-cooler temperature

10 Vernal Definition: Example 1: Example 2: Spring
season leading to summer as temperature rises; days get longer and nights get shorter Example 2: First day of spring March 20/22

11 Autumnal Definition: Example 1: Example 2: Autumn/Fall
Season before winter; temperatures begin to get lower; shorter days, and longer nights Example 2: First day of Fall Sep 22/23

12 Orbit Definition: Example 1: Example 2:
the curved path of a celestial object or spacecraft around a star, planet, or moon,  Example 1: The path of the carousel as it goes round and round Example 2: Moon’s path around Earth Earth around the sun

13 Hemisphere Definition: Example 1: Example 2: Half of a sphere
Two parts of Earth: Northern Southern Example 2: Hemi = half Sphere = 3D round object
