1. Using Context Clues
L 7.4a: Use context (e.g., the overall meaning of a sentence or paragraph; a word's position or function in a sentence) as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase.
During any standardized reading test, you are not afforded the use of a dictionary, thesaurus, or any reference tool. And the people who make the tests will purposely implant words that you will not be familiar with. They do this on purpose to test you for this particular skill.
Context refers to the words that precede or follow a word, and that help clarify the word’s meaning.
When using context clues:
Identify the sentence is talking about
Locate any potential synonyms
Locate phrases that may have been added as additional info
You can also use:
Prefixes, suffixes, and roots
The mystery word’s part of speech

2. Using Context Clues Nouns Verbs
Will come after determiners like THE, A (if it starts with a consonant), or AN (if it starts with a vowel)
Will come after ADJECTIVE, but before VERBS
Will end in
-tion
-ness
-s (if it is plural)
Will come after a NOUN
Will end with suffixes such as
-ing
-ed
-ate

Can be found clinging around NOUNS
Will likely end with the suffix
-ous
-ly
-ful
Can be found clinging around VERBS
Will more than likely end with the suffix -ly

Using context clues, you should identify which of the 15 words fits better in each blank. All 15 words will be used only once.
