Treated article Is the article, as such, intended to be used with the purpose of controlling harmful organisms? Yes No. Example: A wooden pole treated with a wood preservative. Does the active substance(s) have a controlling action on (one of) the target organism(s) of the article? Yes The article has a biocidal function. Imagine that the substance(s) active against the article’s target organism(s) were removed from the article. Would the article still have a market? No. Example: A wooden rat trap treated with a wood preservative, Yes No. Example: A rodent bait box containing a rodenticide Would the sole intended function of the article after removal of the active substance(s) still be that of controlling the organism(s) targeted by the active substance(s)? Yes. Example: A mosquito bed net treated with an insecticide No. The article has another function in addition to the biocidal function. The article has no biocidal function. The article has only biocidal function Should the biocidal function be considered as primary? Perhaps. Example: Antibacterial hand wipes Yes. Example: ? No. Example: antibacterial textiles The article is currently considered on the borderline, and a decision has to be taken case by case. The article has to be authorised as a biocidal product. The article has to comply with Article 58 of BPR.
