Principles of the Constitution
Popular Sovereignty – Federalism – Separation of Powers – Checks and Balances – Limited Government - Pop Sov. -who holds the absolute power, Fed. – system of state & fed. Govt., Sep. of Powers – 3 branches, Checks & Bal – power divided equally, Judicial Review – supreme court can declare laws and actions unconstitutional, Limited Govt. – govt. can only do what is permitted by the const.

Popular Sovereignty Rule by the people. People are the source of government power (consent of the governed) Voting in national, state, county, city, and school board elections

Federalism Power is divided between national and state government

Separation of Powers Power is divided between the 3 Branches of Government Legislative Executive Judicial

Checks and Balances Each branch checks the power of the other two
No one branch will become too powerful

Limited Government The Constitution limits the power of government
Government power is not absolute Government must follow the Constitution and Bill of Rights
