What is Duolingo? Application designed to help a student or anyone learn a new language Engages user through: audio, graphics, reading, writing, and verbal Has a “game” aspect -starts with the basics of Spanish helping students build a base of Spanish structure and verb conjugation After the basics, a student begins to move on to categories of vocabulary and useful tools of the language like: practical conversation, navigation, and culture This means that the application can be used at virtually any level of language development.

The “Game” aspect This is the game aspect of the application. As a student “levels up” they can share it with other users. This could serve as a source of motivation. This also engages the user and makes the application seem less like work and more entertaining.

Why Is It Useful? The application cannot be tracked by a professor if used for homework; it is just used for personal gain and not for assignments. However, it would be perfect for in class activities or to track a student’s fluency. This is a valuable aspect because it will help the instructor differentiate their instruction and tailor their lessons to the needs of the students Often a student will excel in only one or two aspects of language whether that be writing, speaking, or listening, so the fact that every lesson has audio, speaking, etc. is an invaluable aspect.

Where is it applicable? I can see this application being used in a classroom that has computers or tablets available Perfect for a language acquisition style teacher. Many times in a Spanish I high school classroom, conjugation and common vocabulary are taught incompletely or not efficiently and this application will serve as a counterweight to that. the application tracks how strong the user is in all skills covered and shows it it promotes a learning method that has been proven to be less effective. This does not mean that it cannot be used to supplement the acquisition method; while the teaching focuses on helping students naturally acquire their second language like they did their first language, this application can give them the necessary input to produce complex Spanish
