Emsi & Higher Education
USING DATA TO HELP STUDENTS ACHIEVE SUCCESS 15+ Years in Higher Education Small company made up of Economists, Data Scientists, Consultants, & Software Engineers To give some context for Emsi’s relationship with higher education–we’ve partnered with hundreds of institutions over the last 17 years. We’ve developed what is now the industry standard dataset for labor market information–which informs and supports all that we do. Our teams of economists and data scientists work to make that data accessible and actionable for colleges. We’re backed by CareerBuilder–our parent company–and their network of 40,000 businesses. At Emsi, our goal is to leverage these things to help each student on your campus know why they’re in school and which outcome they’re pursuing.

The Right Data (Like Data from Emsi)
Can help answer questions and solve problems Easy-to-use and reliable

Why is it important for colleges to use data?

Reasons for Attending College
FOCUSING ON WHAT’S IMPORTANT Better Job The number one reason students attend college today is to get a better job. –––––––––––––––––––––– The research is from UCLA's Cooperative Institutional Research Program – Annual Freshman Survey We use the data to represent broad sentiment of first-time, full-time college freshman. Primarily baccalaureate students, but shows the general trend among all students. “This college's graduates get good jobs” – is also growing but was recorded through a separate survey question. Two Types of LMI TRADITIONAL LMI REAL-TIME LMI Government Sources
Private On-line Sources Labor Market Information is divided up into Traditional LMI & Real-Time LMI. Traditional LMI [click] is data gathered from government sources like BLS, BEA, & Census Bureau. Real-time LMI [click] is data coming from private, on-line sources like job postings, resume posting sites and profiles. The main Real-time data source used in Career Coach is job postings.
18
The 2 types are like different maps
They each have an important purpose but they can answer very different questions.

22
Core Data Points in Traditional LMI
Job Counts Tell us how many Earnings Tells us how much Job Change Growth or decline
23
What is a “job”? Annualized Full and part-time
Where they work, not where they live Employed & self-employed We define a job as being Annualized (annual averages—average counts across the year), [click] both full and part-time. Jobs are counted [click] where the employee works, not where they live. We also include [click] both employed and those who are their own boss. Due to this [click], one person can hold multiple jobs therefor sometimes there are more jobs than there are workers.
24
Job Change CAN MEAN GROWTH OR DECLINE
[combined two slides and added an animation] OR DECLINE CAN MEAN GROWTH
25
Core Data Points in Real-Time LMI
Helping us understand talent requirements of employers Employers who are advertising Skills wanted by employers Job posting trends Real-time LMI (specifically Job Posting Analytics) can shed light on what specific skills, certificate and degrees employers are looking for in job postings. We get specifics on employers looking to hire and what specific job titles they are looking for. We also get an idea of how hard they have been searching to fill the position (or posting intensity).
26
Questions Answered Traditional Real-Time Which jobs are growing?
What could I make in those jobs? What programs will lead to good jobs? Who’s advertising jobs? What positions are they looking for? What skills are employers looking for?

Traditional LMI Strengths Weaknesses Highly Structured Lack of Detail
Projections & Trends Total Coverage Job Counts Earnings Job Change Lack of Detail No Localized Skills Information Outdated (maybe) No Employer Data Traditional LMI is highly structured. Because it comes from mandated government forms and has to fit into certain coded categories, it’s very consistent and the shape of the data is easier to understand. Hand in hand with structure is the ability to do accurate trend analysis and projections. Because the reporting system is so regulated, we can more accurately look at how a job or industry has done over time and where it’s projected to go in the future. Projections are extremely useful for future program planning and program review. Traditional LMI is also great at capturing the ENTIRE labor market. If the government knows about the jobs, it’s included. That applies to the three core data points, meaning we have complete coverage of jobs and the wages they pay. [click] The weaknesses are a reflection of its strengths. Since it does provide total coverage across the nation traditional LMI can’t get into the fine details and doesn't provide specificity or skills information for a given occupation. Also there is a poor connection to business since the government has to remove anything that could be linked back to a specific establishment. There is also the concern that some of the data is outdated--this is due to the release schedule and the lag time between the collection of the data and its release from the government agencies (this will be covered more in Module 2). Luckily our data also includes Real-time LMI, whose strengths help off-set the weakness of traditional LMI.
35
Real-Time LMI Strengths Weaknesses
Connects Jobs to Specific Businesses Provides Details on Job Descriptions Reflects Current Outlook & Demand Small Portion of Economy Represented Non-Standardized Structure Unable to Produce Projections Real-time LMI’s strength really comes into play by providing details and context to Traditional LMI. It helps connect jobs to specific businesses—we know who’s hired in the past and how hard they worked to fill positions. We also can get details about those jobs: specific job titles, and skills, certifications or degrees requested for those positions. Since real-time LMI is updated monthly (our traditional is quarterly), it does a better job of reflecting the current outlook/demand for specific jobs and occupations. [click] The weaknesses of Real-time LMI are that it’s a voluntary random sample. Also the structure and what’s included in the job posting isn’t standardized. Since it’s a snapshot of the current employment demands and doesn’t account for items in the past, we are unable to produce projections off of this information. However…
36
+ Work Together REAL-TIME TRADITIONAL
It’s easy to see that the strengths of Real-time make up for the weaknesses in Traditional LMI and vice versa! Emsi believes that the use of both of these types together provides all the career information students need to make informed choices!
37
Summary Providing data you need to answer program and career questions. Traditional & Real-Time LMI together provide a complete picture. Connecting your students to your programs and to careers.
