How & Why Covalent Compounds Occur
Atoms like to have 8 electrons in their outer ring. In molecular compounds (two non-metals) the atoms share electrons so that each atoms ends up with 8 electrons in the outermost ring. The bond that is formed is called a covalent compound.

Naming Covalent Compounds
You write the name of the first element and the second element’s ending is changed to “-ide” We use prefixes to state the number of each element present (never put “mono” on the first element) One = mono- Two = di- Three = tri- Four = tetra- Five = penta-
