Ice on Pine Needles. A winter wonderland sparkles briefly in the shining Rocky Mountain sun. The crystalline beauty of a February morning in Colorado Springs, Colorado (headquarters of the Wilderness Medical Society) was captured in this stunning close-up photograph by Dr. Frederick Conte. © Frederick A. Morning Fog in Chisos Basin
Morning Fog in Chisos Basin. Ringed by massive cliffs and superlative views, the Chisos Basin is located in the center of Big Bend National Park—a land of borders. Situated in Texas on the boundary with Mexico along the Rio Grande, it is a place where countries and cultures meet. It is also a place that merges the desert and the mountains. It is a place where south meets north and east meets west, creating a great diversity of plants and animals. The park covers over 801,000 acres of west Texas in the place where the Rio Grande makes a sharp turn—the Big Bend. Photograph © Daniel Ryan, MD, Victor, NY.
