Ms. Deming’s Weekly Newsletter December 14, 2015 Last Week’s Happenings… Our Field Trip to Historic Rosedale Plantation

2 Happening This Week… Grammar
Math Students will continue working on our multiplication unit. Pathway 1: Solving multiplication using pictures, repeated addition, skip counting, and arrays Pathway 2: Multiplying a 1 digit number by a multiple of 10, Identifying patterns in the multiplication table, identifying unknown multiplication equations Pathway 3: Multiplication Properties (commutative, associative, distributive) Pathway 4: 1 and 2 step multiplication word problems *Students who finish all pathways will be working on a PBL** Reading This week we will continue with our nonfiction reading unit. This week the students will learn how to read a historical nonfiction text and answer questions relating to cause/effect and time. Students will also take an assessment on this skill on Tuesday. Students will learn on Wednesday how to distinguish their point of view from that of the author’s. On Thursday and Friday students will learn how to read two texts on the same topic and compare and contrast the main ideas and key details. Students will have an assessment on these two skills after break. Their unit test will also be after break. Writing We will be starting our nonfiction writing unit. Students will be writing nonfiction writing pieces in class that include text features. The lessons in this unit should help students with their second quarter at home project. This week students will select a topic to write about, identify 3-4 main ideas for their paragraphs and begin writing their paragraphs. Grammar This week the students will learn about compound sentences. They will learn that you can join a compound sentence together by using a comma and the words and or but, Students will have a mini grammar assessment on Friday. Science- This week we will finish our force and motion unit. Students received a study guide in their Thurs. folder last week that is due Wed. Their test will be on Thursday. Social Studies- We will continue with our unit on citizenship. This week the students will continue to learn about local government and gov. services. Important Dates to know… -12/14 – 12/18 Scholastic Book Fair in media center -12/15 Winter math MAP testing 1:00-2:30 -12/17 Winter Concert for grade 3 (students should meet in their classrooms at 6 p.m. The concert begins at 6:30). -12/18 Cluster Expo -12/18 December birthday 3:00 -12/18 Student gift exchange (optional to participate) & Holiday Party -12/21 – 1/3 No School Winter Break Vocabulary Dates: -List 5 words introduced 12/7 and 12/8 and test 12/18 Spelling Dates: No spelling until after break! Assignment Due Dates this week: 12/16 (Wednesday) Force and Motion science study guide due Test & Quiz Dates this week: 12/15 (Tuesday) Reading informal assessment on RI3.8 reading technical, scientific, and historical texts and being able to answer questions related to cause/effect and time. 12/17 (Thursday) Force and Motion Science Unit Test 12/18 (Friday) Lesson 5 Vocabulary Test 12/18 (Friday) Grammar Quiz on Compound Sentences (we did not get to last week) Notes from Ms. Deming  -There will be no spelling this week due to winter break. Spelling will resume after winter break. Please just focus on vocabulary this week on lesson 5 since their test is on Friday. Also, there will be no vocabulary the week after break. After every 5 lessons I like to do a review and have students create newspapers using their vocabulary words from the first 5 lessons. Vocabulary will resume 2 weeks after break! -The book fair is going on all this week. If your child wants to buy books, send them to school with money. They will NOT be permitted to go without an adult in the morning. They will go right after lunch. Thank you! -SPIRIT WEEK is this week! There was a paper sent in your child’s Thursday folder that explains what each day is. Please refer to that sheet if your child wishes to participate. - The 2nd and 3rd grade winter concert is this Thursday. Students should be at their classroom at 6 (no earlier). Parents should drop off their child and go get a seat in the gym. The performance begins at 6:30 p.m. Students should dress in their best attire for the performance. Parents will be picking up their child back in the classroom after the show. Please be prompt when picking up your child.
