14 XML Feature Modeling (XFM)
Bentley Systems, Incorporated 12/2/2018 XML Feature Modeling (XFM) GeoSpatial Administrator XML Metadata Driven GIS Features Properties Domain lists, default values Property based symbology Property based annotation Relationships Placement and editing rules Operations and methods Other behaviors Message propagation rules User interface Extensible Enforces user standards Easy to implement without programming XFM Schema Bentley Map Via the Geospatial Administrator, XFM lets users and developers create highly interactive graphic applications without programming. XFM applications help users maintain standards by encapsulating them with the feature definition and placement tools, including property based annotation and symbology. The XFM model also defines data sources and indexes for fast and seamless access to spatial data, regardless of format. Compared to the data model used with MicroStation GeoGraphics, XFM provides a number of advantages. It is flexible and extensible allowing new capabilities to be added over time. It provides property based annotation (PBA) which enables annotation to be linked to, and driven by, feature attributes. It provides property based symbology (PBS) meaning that element symbology is linked to, and driven by, feature attributes. For example, if a Road feature has a property type of 4-Lane then the color value will be 3. Feature placement and editing rules can be created for most feature types which helps enforce user standards. And finally, feature property data is embedded in the file, creating feature rich design files that can be used without a database connection. geographic objects © 2002 Bentley Systems, Incorporated

16 Geospatial Administrator
Bentley Systems, Incorporated 12/2/2018 Geospatial Administrator How does it work? Manages the XFM framework through one interface Runs outside MicroStation Defines and maintains XFM project files Schema contains comprehensive definition of geographic objects (features) Defines coordinate system and projection information User interface definition – dynamically loaded at run-time Inclusion of custom made VBA or MDL routines User specific definition of features, operations, methods – using workspaces Automatically generates MicroStation workspaces and Map metadata files The Geospatial Administrator stores the configuration in a single Geospatial Schema XML file that, when exported, produces the metadata files to be used by Bentley Map. With this application the XFM framework can be managed through one interface. This includes defining and maintaining XFM project files, and geographic objects (features) which includes their properties, symbologies, annotations, operations and methods. The GSA also provides tools for defining coordinate system and projection information as well as defining the user interface which is dynamically loaded at run-time. The GSA will also automatically generate customized MicroStation workspaces and the necessary Bentley Map files required to describe the various features, operations and interfaces. © 2002 Bentley Systems, Incorporated

12/2/2018 Topology Model Based on the Oracle 10g topology model Two Topology modes: Session topology, built on-the-fly as needed Persistent topology, topological primitives are created only once Primitives (nodes, edges, faces) are store in the DGN Each primitive can be associated with one or more features Both modes are supported with or without Oracle Shared editing is easier Analysis uses high performance topological algorithms Features involved in topology and split/merge rules are defined in the Geospatial Administrator Topology can be created on-the-fly or on-demand in Bentley Map. Bentley supports two types of topology in our GIS Solutions; session (“on-demand”) topology and persistent (“stored in DGN or Oracle”) topology.  Topological relationships are stored in the DGN file according to the same model employed by Oracle Spatial. This allows complex analysis operations to occur quickly and maintains compatibility with Oracle Spatial. Session topology is created when needed for spatial operations. Bentley Map includes an extensive range of tools to repair, build, and create topology from existing geometry. Persistent topology is automatically maintained while the DGN is edited for features defined to participate in a topology. The topological information is guaranteed to be up to date at any time. Complex spatial analysis can be performed very quickly on the persisted topology since it doesn’t need to be recalculated. © 2002 Bentley Systems, Incorporated

24 Spatial Analysis and Presentation
Bentley Systems, Incorporated 12/2/2018 Spatial Analysis and Presentation Spatial Analysis Create buffers around selected features Spatial Query Overlay feature classes Results symbolization and reporting Maintain overlays in project file or export to supported formats Thematic Display Ramp Ranges Unique Value Fully configurable symbology Auto generated legends Thematic definitions persisted These include tools for creating buffers around objects, performing topology overlays, creating thematic maps, and more. The results of these analytical processes can be plotted, printed, or published to PDF. Bentley Map derives topology dynamically from map features and stores it in memory as a topology layer. This approach avoids the permanent storage of topological relationships and eliminates the need to rebuild topology after revisiting the base elements. Map elements are used to create point, line and area topology layers and can optionally be filtered by spatial and data extents. Buffer zones can also be created around mapping features and be used for spatial analysis. In addition analytical operations such as buffers and overlays can be performed to create new thematic maps or perform site selection analysis. © 2002 Bentley Systems, Incorporated
