2 Macedonia Lay to the north of Greece
People of Greece thought the Macedonians as barbarians Macedonian leaders typically thought of themselves as Greek

3 King Phillip Seized power in 359 B.C.
Dreamed of conquering Greece when he came to power United Macedonia and formed alliances with Greek city-states through bribes or threats Created an army greater than Sparta. Started conquering one city-state after another By 338 B.C., all of Greece was conquered

4 King Phillip After seizing Greece, Phillip planned on attacking Persia. Before he was able to start, King Phillip was assassinated in 336 B.C.

5 Alexander When he was young, Alexander was tutored by Aristotle
Alexander greatly admired his tutor His role model was Achilles and Alexander was an experienced soldier After his father’s assassination, Alexander became king at age 20

6 Alexander One of his first actions was to invade the Persian Empire
He led his army through Asia where they won battle after battle He conquered places such as India, Babylon, and Egypt

7 Alexander the Great Within 11 years, he had conquered a vast amount of land As he conquered, he established cities, naming many after himself

8 Alexander the Great He was an energetic leader and military genius
He drove himself and his army hard…never losing a battle His army eventually tired out and Alexander agreed to turn back just past the Indus River. Near Babylon, he came down with a fever and died in 323 B.C.

9 Alexander the Great Like his icon Achilles, Alexander died young…only 13 years after taking the throne. His conquests spread the Greek culture over a very large area. After his death, there was vast confusion and disorder over his lands. His descendants fought over the land for 300 years.
