1 National 5 Physical Education

2 Learning Intentions Pupils will gain a better understanding of the Physical Fitness Factors Pupils will understand how physical fitness factors can impact performance, in both a positive and negative way.

3 Physical (Fitness) Factors
There are different aspects of physical fitness and each contributes to overall fitness in either a positive or negative way. Look at the list below, which ones are physical fitness factors? Control Anxiety (nerves) Accuracy Speed Creativity Determination Cardio Respiratory Endurance Motivation Fluency Flexibility Strength Concentration Power Team dynamics Anger

Physical (Fitness) Factors Control Anxiety (nerves) Accuracy Speed Creativity Determination Cardio Respiratory Endurance Motivation Fluency Flexibility Strength Concentration Power Team dynamics Anger

5 Cardio Respiratory Endurance
The ability of the heart and lungs to work efficiently together to provide the working muscles with oxygen over a long period of time.

6 Cardio Respiratory Endurance
This allows a performer to maintain the same pace throughout a long period of play. Someone with a higher level of CRE will not tire as quickly, and so quality of movements and skills are maintained until the end of the performance.

7 Strength the maximum force a muscle or group of muscle can exert in a single effort

8 Strength Strength can be further divided into static (the muscles contract and hold one position) and dynamic (the muscles move contracting and extending) and explosive strength or power (the muscle contraction happens at high speed).

9 Speed the ability of your whole body, arm or leg to move from one point to another as quickly as possible.

10 Speed

11 Flexibility the range of movement around a joint and the elasticity of the muscles.

12 Power sometimes known as explosive strength, is the combination of speed and strength

13 Introducing the command words
In PE you will frequently be asked to describe and explain. Describe – simply means to give a detailed account of something. Explain – is all about the WHY When explaining the impact of factors on performance – use the acronym FCI: Factor Context Impact

14 FCI- Example Factor: In basketball, a player who is powerful will be able to jump higher than their opponents. Context: This means that they will be able to win more rebounds in attack and defence. Impact: This will give their team a better chance of winning the game as they will have additional chances to score in attack and will be able to stop their opponents from winning more rebounds when they are defending.

15 Task: In Groups, you will be given a task card with a physical factor and you will have to explain the impact of that factor in an activity of your choice.

16 Homework
