   TELLING THE TIME This 12 hour clock has a big minute hand and a smaller hour hand. It takes 12 hours for both hands to travel all the way around the clock face and get back to where they started. What about now!!    TELLING THE TIME The minute hand tells you how many minutes have passed since the start of the last hour. There are 60 minutes in 1 hour.    When the minute hand gets here it has gone a quarter of the way around the clock so we call it a quarter past. When the minute hand has got back to the start we call it o'clock. 60 minutes = 1 hour has gone by. 1 4 to 1 4 Past 45 minutes (three quarters of an hour) has gone by. 15 minutes (a quarter of an hour) has gone by. When the minute hand gets here it only has a quarter of the way to go to get back to the start so we call it quarter to. When the minute hand gets here it has gone half way around the clock so we call it a half past. 1 2 Past Intro ¼ ½ ¾ 30 minutes (half an hour) has gone by.
